How do I get health insurance if im 17 and not living in the same state as my parents?

Im a 17 year old male and im moving from Georgia to California. I need health insurance and im trying to figure out if I can stay on my parents health insurance until im 21 or do I have to get something else? please help

  1. Your parents should be able to cover you until you are 18 or possibly 21 if you are going to college.
  2. If you are a full time student you can stay on your parents insurance until you turn 25 with most policies. It doesn't matter if you're living out of state. If you are not a full time student you will not be able to stay on after you are 18 with most policies whether you are in the same state or not. In this case you'll need your own policy. You'll want to visit a local independent agent when you get to CA to find a policy that fits you best. In either case you'll want to contact your current insurance and ask because there are exceptions to the ages with some policies.

  4. Well, the FIRST thing to do is check with the CA Children's Health Insurance Program. As a minor, you're probably eligible, and their income guidelines are VERY generous for the kids. www.healthyfamilies.ca.gov is the website.
