- Here is a list of some of the top health insurance companies that offer Florida individual health insurance coverage ranked in order of easiest to hardest to be approved for (with their height and weight guidelines): 1. Aetna 2. Assurant 3. Humana 4. Golden Rule (United Healthcare) 5. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida The key is that you will want to work with an independent health insurance agent that represents many different companies so that they can guide you to the best company to apply with for your individual situation. This way you will not have to waste time applying for many different companies and potentially getting declined. - No one here can give you a meaningful answer. It will depend upon the company, the plan, and how over weight you are. Some companies will have a standard rate and everyone pays the same rate as long as they're within the height and weight guidelines for that company (if you're out of the guidelines, either over weight or under weight, they will decline to accept you). Other companies will have a preferred, standard, and rated weight guideline. If you fall within the rated group you will pay more. How much more will again depend upon the company and plan. Most will charge you 10% more than standard if you are within the "lighter" rated group up to 80% more if you are within the "heavier" rated group. You'll want to visit a local independent agent that works with all the major companies in your area. The agent can work with you to find the best plan and can give you an idea of the cost. There is no extra charge using an agent. One note; the on-line quoting systems will quote you either preferred or standard so you can't get a good idea there. Be very wary of medical discount cards. They are not regulated by the Department of Insurance nor do the people that sell them need to be licensed. This means you have little recourse when you have problems with the plan. If you are tempted by the low price and claims of “save up to 80%” be aware that very few doctors actually take these cards. It does you little good if you have to drive 4 hours to find a doctor that will accept the card. Montana couldn’t find any doctors in the whole state that actually took the card and only one dentist who was on probation for unlawful activities so they banned the sale of the card and fined the company. See this link http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/west/2006/11/22/74554.htm for more information. Many other states (including Florida) are working to ban these cards as well. Before signing up with any discount plan get a list of doctors. If they won’t give you a list consider it to be a scam. Call the doctors on the list to make sure they’re still taking the card (many don’t even know that they’re listed as a provider) and that they’re accepting new patients.
