Need help with employer insurance- I found out pregnant after hired on but covered under temporary insurance??

I have been working for a company since August 9th, 2007 through a staffing agency. On January 14th, 2008 I got hired w/ the company. The staffing agency is allowing me to continue my health insurance coverage/benefit program for my "step" Son and I until the 90 day mark and as long as I want after. At 90 days, the company that I am working fors insurance will kick in. The coverage with the staffing agency is "Starbridge Select" through Cigna and is considered "COBRA" ( I think, atleast it states COBRA in the explanation of benefits handbook) So, I found out I am pregnant January 21st, which is a week after I get hired. After researching, the "COBRA Starbridge Select Insurance with the staffing agency" only covers: In-Hospital Medical Expense Benefit: Daily In-Hospital Benefit:$25,000/year Paid at 100%** to a maximum of $250/day for 100 days Additional In-Hospital Surgery and Maternity Benefit: Paid at 100%** to a maximum of $1,500 Surgery, $1,500 Maternit I am going to continue keeping the "COBRA" after the 90 days. Most likely my hired on company ins. will cover 80% if any, could the "COBRA" coverage of $1,500 and hospital stay coverage up to $250/day be used towards my 20% that I would have to pay? Has anyone been in this situation? I've also heard of a maternity discount card. Has anyone had it? The link is: http://www.maternityadvantage.com/form1/mcard.asp My copays for doctor's visits with "COBRA" are $10 which is great. Would that be the same for the ultra sounds and whatnot? What about Short Term Disability at 90 days, do most ins. companies offer it? If so, will it be too late? I am going to be out for 6 weeks after the delivery- is there any reimbursement available out there? The company that I have been hired on with does not offer it. Thanks for all the help and advice!!! :) Does anyone know an average amount per night at a hospital? Isn't it ALOT more than $250? I am in Dallas, Texas if that information helps.

  1. You really need to give them a call about that.
  2. Pregnancy health insurance can be different for every policy, individual, cobra, and group. Best call them or talk to your employer so you know what to expect early on.
  3. If I am understanding your statement correctly you will have 2 insurances if this is correct then yes you will be covered 100%. I highly suggest that you contact both insuarnce companys and speak with them. Good Luck and congradulations
  4. How much are you going to have to pay for the Cobra? You might want to double check on that, because a lot of places you end up paying the whole premium, and it's a lot! It might or might not be of any benefit to keep it. Unfortunately, I think you WILL have to call and talk to HR about all of this. However, you should know that your $10 copay won't apply to ultrasounds and all of the prenatal testing. Sorry I can't give you a better answer!
  5. They will pay your maternity fees at 100% of the ALLOWED amount up to $1500....(meaning the doc might charge the insurance $300 for an ultrasound but the ins. company's allowed amount for that is $90. THey will pay up 100% of $90 which is $90 = ) and only the $90 will be added to your $1500 cap and you will NOT be charged the difference.) Maternity is anything related to prenatal and postnatal care and labor and delivery charges for the the doc. Now your hospital stays for you and baby after the delivery SHOULD go under your hospital benefits...meaning they will pay a maximum of $250 a day of the ALLOWED amount...(you may me billed for anything over once the $250 daily is met) up to 25,000 per year and that should include you and baby. OK...= ) hope I helped EDIT: Once you pick up the 2nd insurance you should not have to pay anything
  6. That insurance coverage doesn't sound bad at all compared to some ladies I've listened too.. to answer you question about short term disability, in my experience it will in fact be pre-existing and they won't cover your pregnancy.
