Switching jobs 2 months pregnant...health care help till insurance kicks in?

I currently have insurance, but hate my job and it doesn’t pay much. As soon as I found out I was pregnant I started looking for another job that pays better. I have been called back for a second interview with a promising job, it pays $2 more an hour, but the insurance doesn’t kick in until after 90 days. So I will be 5 months pregnant by the time the insurance kicks in. I will not be able to pay the cobra on my current insurance it is way to much. Are there any programs that help pregnant women? I have looked into medical but with my new job I make a few dollars above the limit. I live in San Diego and the living expenses take up most of my income. Does anyone know of any programs that might help? Is there anywhere I can call to make sure I will be coverd by my new employer?

  1. Go to you local department of social service you can get insurance until you are able to getit on your job
  2. Try to apply for medicade at your local human services office. If you don't have insurance & are pregnant you almost always qualify. Good luck!
  3. You also have to find out if your new insurance would even cover pre-existing conditions (like pregnancy). MOST don't cover conditions, including pregnancy, if you already had them when your insurance kicked in. And if they don't you would have no insurance at all. And the answer below me said that you have to tell your employer that you are pregnant and that is ridiculous. You NEVER have to tell them. That would be discrimination.
  4. Pregnancy is very costly, if you are over 15 weeks pregnant you must disclose that information to your new employer. Most likely they will tell you to take a hike, I would. Understand that during that 90 days you will have a couple OB visits and so on. Insurance is very valuable and even with the new insurance, they may not cover you right away because you are already pregnant. Trust me, do yourself a favor and stay at your current job with the insurance and take a maternity leave when you are ready. Suck it up, it will be worth it and you will thank me later.
  5. ROBIN T don't scare her!!!! Group plans MUST cover pre-existing conditions. It is only private insurance that does not. When your group plan kicks in you WILL be covered!! Robin is correct about not having to disclose your pregnancy. Untill then, apply for Medicaid. If you make too much, talk to your doc. They will set you up on a payment plan where you pay like $50 a visit or something affordable. Your doc will help if Medicaid won't. Good luck on baby and new job!!! Yes, call the HR department and ask to speak to the benefits specialist. You don't have to say "I am pregnant" just ask if they are standard group plans and will they cover a known or unknown pre-existing condition. Really though, I would just ask if they are standard group plans. Like I already said, group plans will cover, private won't. I have never heard of a company that sold private plans, so you I am 99% sure once the waiting period is over you are SAFE.
  6. I was able to get medicaid, so you should definitely look into it. Also, your new employer cannot NOT cover your pregancy on the grounds of it being a preexisting condition. Your new insurance should cover you. Also, you don't have to tell you employer you are pregnant, no matter how far along you are. It's not their business. Good luck!
