- No such thing as cheap insurance these days. The best suggestion I would give you is just look some companies up from the yellow pages and have them give some quotes. Do the comparisons.
- It is difficult to find a cheap insurance that is also good. I have blue cross/ blue shield thru my job but I understand that they are expensive. I can't help you with that but my advice NEVER go with Kaiser. Kaiser is only good if you are a healthy young person; basically if you don't need them. If you get sick they will limit your choice of physician, care , meds,... believe me I am in healthcare. Kaiser is a joke!

- If you mean by "cheap" low monthly premiums, you are going to have to trade off certain types of coverage and/or pay high deductibles. The HSA accounts offer a savings component for those who purchase high deductible coverage. The Department of insurance for each state regulates the rates and/or types of policies that may be sold in that state. Look at the web sites of some of the larger carriers, Kaiser. Blue Cross, etc in your area. Some carriers have mini policies that cover basic care for folks who cannot afford traditional policies. Also check your State Insurance Commissioners web-site to ascertain the cost range of policies in your state. Lifestyle choices also influence premium ratings (eg. non-smokers, healthy diets etc).
- First, I would make a list of what you are looking for in a health plan and then rank them or group them into categories based on priority. For example, are you more interested in plans that include regular doctor visits or plans that give you more freedom to visit the doctor you want to see? Managed care plans such as HMOs (home maintenance organizations) and PPOs (preferred provider organizations) include preventive care such as regular doctor visits but restrict whom you can see. Traditional fee-for-service (FFS) plans give you freedom to go where you’d like but usually do not cover routine doctor appointments. Just remember that lower monthly premiums don’t always translate into a cheaper insurance policy. If the plan does not cover what you need to cover, then you’ll still end up footing the bill. Moreover, plans with low premiums mean you might be able to afford the low monthly payment, but will you be able to afford the high deductible? If you’re in your twenties, you might want to check out the “Sound” set of plans from UniCare or the “Tonik” plans from Blue Cross Blue Shield. They have been hyped as offering coverage choices that young adults might be interested in. You also might want to see what Consumer Reports has to say about health plans. In a survey CR conducted last year, more people were satisfied with HMOs than PPOs, but the study authors noted that this could be a function of lower prices that HMOs offer. (See link below to get to the report). The best way to see what’s out there is to talk with locally licensed health insurance agents. MostChoice.com – one of the first health insurance Web sites – offers a simple, quick way to get in touch with local agents. All you have to do is fill out a short information request form, and MostChoice will send you free instant quotes from health insurance companies near you. Then, within two days, local insurance agents will contact you to talk about what you’re looking for in an insurance policy. Remember that Web sites are not allowed to offer cheaper prices than insurance agents, so you won’t be spending more on the identical policy if you buy it from an agent. Since there’s no obligation to purchase insurance from the agents that contact you, you are in control. You tell them what you want and wait until one of them delivers the plan that’s right for you.
