Is there a GOOD, HONEST, RELIABLE, AFFORDABLE Health Insurance (in TN), that individuals can acquire?
I have a job that has an option for health insurance, but the insurance in terrible & expensive. My boss has agreed that if we can find a good health insurance company, that he would be willing to pay 1/2 of our premiums. There are too many health insurance companies out there & not all of them are just for individuals or small businesses. If you know of one, please tell me. I live in Tennessee (East TN). Thank you!

- BCBS is best- but it's pricey
- I think Blue Cross Blue shield is one of the best, but that isn't saying much when it comes to insurance companies.
- NO, they're there to make money and try to screw you over, there's no such thing as a "good and honest" health insurance company.
- Blue Cross Blue Shield definitely big there. United Health Care is big in places I've been - not sure how available it is in East Tennessee but it can't hurt to call. The problem though is 1/2 premium even for an indvidual is going to leave you with a quite a chunk to pay. When I was doing COBRA a few years back on United the 100% I paid was over $300 meaning 1/2 would still have been over $150. A family plan is going to be even more expensive. You also might want to ask if he is covering 1/2 premium for just the individual for for family. I know BCBS offers "personal" plans in some places and I think the costs for those may be cheaper than regular plans but I suspect copays are higher and benefits are more limited. P.S. There are companies that offer "benefits" services including administering insurance. They may be able to get your company in under a larger group plan with reduced premiums. You might want to investigate those.
- Affordable is a relative term. You need a trusted adviser to help you through the process so that you understand what you are purchasing. Some may suggest going on line to get a quote but there is so much more to this decision than price. The first thing you need to determine is how much you will participate in sharing the cost of your health care. This will determine how affordable your health insurance plan will be. If you choose a plan that covers everything i.e. doctors office visits, prescription drugs, preventative health benefits, maternity coverage, low deductibles and low copays your monthly premiums will be significant. On the other hand if you are young and healthy and rarely use the health care system you can choose a plan that covers the major health catastrophe your premiums will be relatively low. You can use the premium savings to pay for the occasional doctor visit and still come out ahead. Check with the agent that writes your home or auto insurance he/she can provide you a health insurance proposal that takes into account your budget and health situation. If they don't handle health insurance they could refer you to a trusted colleague. If you want to use the Internet use it to educate yourself but use an agent to purchase the coverage.
- Well, it's always going to be cheaper through your employer! If the "we" means you're looking for a family plan, family plans cost $800 to $1200 a month. AND, individual family plans usually don't cover maternity. They won't take you if anyone in the family has a serious health condition. If you're shopping for individual coverage, your best bet is to go through a local agent - start with the guy that does your house/car insurance.
- please quit trying to sell ameriplan insurance on this forum
