Individual health PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
I am loosing my current health insurance next week. I have looked into Cobra benefits, but I know that will be very expensive. I have also done an application with Humana One but got turned per pre-existing health conditions (ADHD). Then I almost was suckered into getting a policy from the MEGA health and life insurance comany, who I have come to find are a bunch of scam artists... I need insurance. Does anyone know of an insurance company who generally takes pre-existing conditions yet doesn't charge a million bucks? I have also heard of the HIPPA law and policies through that, but I don't fully understand all that. Someone please explain, I will be so thankful for some honest helpful answers. Thank you!!

- HIPPA is a federal law that means that group insurance policies (usually through employers) cannot exclude coverage for a pre-existing condition when there has not been a break in coverage longer than 63 days. They may put a waiting period of up to 12 months for those condtions though. Here is a link that may help you: http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/faqs/faq_consumer_hipaa.html You might consider going to an independant agent in your area to get some ideas on what carriers may accept you. Probably your best bet is to get a job that offers insurance, though.
- No. Generally, insurance companies don't take pre-existing conditions. That's why COBRA makes sense. HIPAA is for moving from one group plan to another group plan - and then the new group can't exclude your preexisting conditions, if you've had coverage for 12 months, and a lapse of less than 63 days. Private policies do NOT have to take you, with pre-existing conditions. It's kinda like trying to buy a lottery ticket good for last night's drawing. Think about it - they'd go broke, exchanging $300 a month of coverage for $800 a month of benefits. Honest answer - either take cobra, or get a new job with group benefits.
- I disagree about taking COBRA as it is only temporary coverage. It should be a last resort only; not only because of cost, but that fact that it will run out and may have missed a window of insurability on the individual market. There are some companies that will accept you even if you have a preexisting condition. Or they might insure you for everything but ADHD - which in my mind is preferable to going with COBRA. We have had some luck with Anthem and Golden Rule as well as others.
