Do I need to show proof of mariage to Aetna?

I'm about to sign up for Aetna health insurance. If I'm adding my "wife" to my policy, do I need to provide a copy of my marriage certificate? Also, are insurance companies generally willing to sign up spouses in common-law marriages?
