California Health Insurance?

I am looking to get health insurance for a year, more to take care of neglected issues than to cover my butt if I get sick/hurt (I'm 27, betting on youth and good health!). Kaiser seems to be the most appealing because they cover a broader range of services. I am namely interested in physical therapy (winged scapula), dermatology (oily skin/acne), perhaps mental illness services as I have suffered from depression (although I somewhat consider it a problem of my past). I'm aware insurance plans won't cover preexisting conditions, but how can they really prove these issues didn't start yesterday, right? I'm overwhelmed with my choices. Is it worth paying $330/mo for $0 deductible, 0% coinsurance, $40 co pays and a max out of pocket @ $3000? Or is it smarter to pay $166/mo, $2700 deductible, 0% coinsurance, $0 co pays after deductible, and max out of pocket @ $5000 (including deductible)? Etc. I have put off getting insurance because I'm scared I will pick a completely inappropriate plan. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

  1. Yes, a local agent that works with all of the companies can shed some light on your problem, and they won't charge you anything to do so. However, just on the surface I'd say it is smarter to go with the $166 per month plan because the insurance will not cover your pre-existing conditions. If you lie on the application you'll soon be back on here complaining about those evil insurance companies denying your claim. P.S. The insurance company cannot tell that an issue is pre-existing but the doctor can, and the insurance company will ask the doctor.
  2. Just put it down on paper and you will see the best choice financially is the first one. Under the second plan you have to pay $2700 out of pocket before the Kaiser plan will begin to cover you and you may never meet that in the course of a year.
  3. Neglected issues, aka, preexising conditions, will probably be excluded, under private health insurance. Cosmetic issues - aka oily skin & acne - is never covered under insurnace. Yeah, they can prove these issues didn't start yesterday. What, you had perfectly good skin yesterday, but the day you turned 27 it went greasy? How dumb do you think they are? They don't HAVE to "prove" that the conditions were preexisting. They can just be reasonable - if you've gone without insurance for five years, and all of a sudden in the next six months you file tons of claims, well, it's kinda obvious!! It doesn't reflect well on you, for three reasons: 1. your honesty is completely lacking and 2. you're apparently not that bright, that you think you can pull one over on them and 3. you're naivete, that you've never heard of the medical information bureau, and that you think you're the only person who's tried to defraud the health insurance industry - that's kinda cute, but it won't be cute when your lies get found out and you're the one screaming about how you're stuck with $10,000 of medical bills, because the insurance company retroactively cancelled your policy because YOU were dishonest. You'll be the first one blaming your screwing yourself over, on someone else.
  4. "I'm aware insurance plans won't cover preexisting conditions, but how can they really prove these issues didn't start yesterday, right?" Because they didn't start selling insurance yesterday either. If you buy the plan and then start putting in claims two years later, they won't figure it out. But, you can pretty much guarantee if you start going to the doctor for those items in the first 6 months that you'll get denied. Call a health insurance broker and they'll go through your options.
