Scan Medical Insurance

What deals are there on travel medical insurance for Canadians going to the US?

I'm a healthy adult, looking to travel in the US from Canada from two weeks up to a month, perhaps more. Would like a bare insurance plan to cover emergency costs in case of being in a car accident, etc., while in the US. Are there companies in the US that insure Canadians coming down at a reasonable rate? I'm talking about being hit by a car as a pedestrian --- I don't have to worry about car insurance because I don't have a car.

  1. In the US, your car insurance would cover emergency costs from a car accident, not health insurance. In the US, insurance is regulated on the state level. Many have prices based on age. You would be best off dealing with a Canadian company.
  2. Every airline and travel agency sells travel medical insurance. The type offered by American Express is good but I believe you have to be a card member (if you are then call the number on the back of the card). Also check with the CAA as they offer it (but you may have to be a member). Finally remember to check with your home health plan to see if you can add USA coverage. The USA has wonderful medical care but it isn't free or even cheap. It's great you are planning for this as an otherwise-silly accident could turn into a crisis if you don't have medical insurance.
