Best Affordable Health Insurance in Indiana?
My fiance is currently making about $1200 cooking full-time at a restaurant. Our rent eats up a little more than half of that. He needs to find an affordable insurance plan and he's tried at work but we've heard it's not a very good value for the $200 he'd be paying a month for it. Can anyone suggest some affordable health insurance plans? He's reasonably healthy, does not have any pre-existing conditions, but he does smoke.

- What do YOU consider affordable??? You are aware that "affordable" will mean VERY low coverage and high deductibles....right???
- "Affordable" insurance would cost you more than regular insurance. "Affordable" means that the insurance is available because of a government program to make insurance available at a price that is determined by your income instead of by your health. For someone making $1200 per month, "affordable" insurance would cost more than regular insurance costs for someone who is reasonably healthy. Some health insurance options in Indiana are: Anthem BlueCross BlueShield UnitedHealthOne Celtic HumanaOne None of these is officially called "affordable". You would have to pay a lot more money to get "affordable" insurance.
- His best source, is a local, independent agent. I'm not sure what exactly he's looking at, as far as determining "value", but if he's 20 and perfectly healthy, no preexisting conditions, $200 should be able to buy him into an HMO with a $250 or $500 deductible. If he's 40, though, then $200 with no preexisting conditions, if he's not overweight, he'd need to be taking on a substantial deductible - $3,000 a year, at least. Or maybe he thinks he should get dental and vision for that $200 a month - those are separate policies, and rarely pay out more than they cost. But since "do it yourself" insurance clearly isn't working for him, he needs to use a local broker, who can explain how it works, and help him balance cost and coverages.
- Health insurance covers you while you're at home or at work.
