  1. Dental insurance never pays for itself. The amount you pay in premium is rarely rarely less than what you would have paid in treatment. Dental insurance usually pays 50% of the treatment up to $1500 per year.
  2. I recommend finding a local dental school. Due to the year wait before anything is covered, and the severe policy limitations, dental insurance rarely pays out more than it costs.
  3. Depends on what you're looking for it to cover. If you are just wanting preventative care, you're in luck. In the last couple of years, we have learned that our dental health can affect our overall health. Dental health has been directly linked to heart health. Because taking care of your teeth is essential to your overall health, preventative care is covered. This means two checkups per year with cleanings, usually covered at 100%, and fillings and any other preventative treatments are covered at 50% or better. I deal with individual health insurance but have only "sold" dental once. I believe it was Delta Dental which can be found through Google. You can also go through ehealthinsurance.com or any of the major carriers such as Aetna, Cigna or Humana.
  4. They are all about the same. Different companies have different plans in different states. There is a 1 year waiting period for serious work and most cover 25-50% for basic routine care. You can call a local insurance agent and ask about insurance where you live. I looked into individual dental insurance and discovered the dentists in my area dont take that particular individual plan and those who do cover 25%. The group dental insurance is quite different from individual insurance.
