COBRA Health Insurance?

If I buy health insurance w COBRA coverage from my previous employer, does it mean I dont' have to worry about insurance companies who only cover you after 1 year of no health problems. I might have medical condition now. I went to hospital w/o insurance and got back home the same day withi limited tests done. The doctor said I have to get more tests done to find out more but I left the hospital fearing the medical invoice I am going to get will be too much. If I bought COBRA Insurance from my previous employer can I use it immediately

  1. Yes, that is correct. I've been on COBRA for the past year and a half, and the pre-existing clause that causes trouble if you allow your insurance to lapse will not be an issue for you so long as you have COBRA. I am a type 1 diabetic and this is essential for me so I have researched it and it shouldn't be an issue for you. It's only if you let your insurance lapse that you run into the "pre-existing clause" bull. Hope this helps!
  2. Yes, if you take the COBRA health insurance plan then the plan will cover all of your pre-existing conditions immediately. The plan will usually only last for 18 months so if you have not obtained other coverage by that time then you will want to purchase another plan that covers all pre-existing conditions too: a HIPAA health insurance plan. Here is some more information on COBRA and HIPAA:
  3. Cobra will cover your pre-existing conditions, but it will only last 18 months. With individual insurance, if you have a pre-existing condition, insurance carriers can (in most states) exclude coverage for your pre-existing condition, or charge you a higher rate for coverage. When your current medical condition is resolved, apply for, and keep your own individual policy. You can not be singled out for a rate increase, nor can your policy be canceled, except for non payment. Do not cancel any existing policy until you have your new policy in writing.
