How much would health insurance at the least be for an 18 year old....?
I'm 17, I'll be 18 in December and I'll be moving out. I was wondering how much the cheapest health insurance would possibly be if I got my own plan? I don't have any major medical issues. I was diagnosed with Short-term memory loss and PCOS. Right now I'm not on any medication right now, but I MIGHT have to start taking something for my PCOS or my Thyroid before I move out. I went on one website, I can't remember which and it said for minimum coverage it's be 170$....Is that really true? Co-pay and all that was extremely low too. Any advice? BTW: I would stay on my dad's plan, BUT I am moving out of state which is why I'm asking this. I was also told that I don't need to disclose medical information from my past medical history if I was under 18...is that true also?

- You have a prior condition and will not find any company to cover you. Go to your State's Website and look for a Health Insurance link. Most States offer group policies through them that are the cheapest you can find. You need to make sure local doctors, hospitals and pharmacies accept that specific plan.
- It all depends. Most states do not allow kids under 19 to have health insurance by themselves. Hopefully, when you did the quote you put in a zip code in your new state. Hopefully, the website you used was legitimate and that new state is one of the few that will accept child only policies. You still must disclose medical issues in many states. PCOS along with thyroid problems and memory loss ARE major medical issues. They'll still accept you (assuming you are moving to one of the few states that allow kids) but there may be a waiting period before your medical issues are covered (depending upon state regulations). You need to call an agent in the new state and ask them to help you. There is no charge using an agent and they'll be able to tell you the rules and regulations concerning child only policies. BTW - you're old enough now to learn that the $ sign goes before the number. For example - $170.
- You cannot get your own plan until you are 19. You are correct that you do not need to disclose past information if you are under 18. All you need to disclose is your age, because that is enough for them to know that they will not let you have the plan, at any price.
- In many states you won't be able to buy coverage on your own until you're 19.....since you can get coverage without medical underwriting 'til 18.
