SUNY Buffalo Medical Insurance Waiver? Help!?

I am a resident in NYC but I go to school outside of the city in SUNY Buffalo. I recently filled out a medical waiver but it was denied. Aetna (the student health insurance company) sent me a verification form to be filled out by a health insurance representative. In my case, I need someone from Fidelis Care to fill it out. I went into the insurance company office the other day and a rep. filled out the paper. Everything was well until the last question on the form. It was a YES/NO answer thing that stated: "The subscriber's plan is currently active and I agree to maintain health insurance coverage through the entire 2011/2012 academic year." The rep. answered "NOT APPLICABLE" and the reason was <Local Department of Social Services handles recertification process> I do not understand what this is suppose to mean. My health insurance plan is active and I'm positive about it.

  1. Your "health insurance plan" seems to be Medicaid - welfare health insurance. It probably won't count, for "credible coverage", and your waiver won't be accepted. You'll have to buy into the student health coverage plan. It's not "real" health insurance. It's welfare. You don't always QUALFY for welfare health insurance - and if you're on the "child only" plan, it automatically expires when you turn 19.
