Health Insurance Options?
I got a new job and am in the 90-day period before my wife and I are eligible for my company's health insurance plan. We have the option of going with COBRA until we are eligible (July 1st) but it's RIDICULOUSLY expensive for such a short period of time. Are there any other alternatives? Even just Major Medical? Any thoughts? Thanks!

- There are short term medical plans available from many of the major insurance companies. STM plans do not have all of the bells and whistles of a traditional plan but it does give you great coverage in the event of a major illness or accident. They are much less than COBRA and are also much less than traditional plans. Contact a local agent to see what plans are available in your area.
- Allen, yeah, I know COBRA is extremely expensive. You jsut have to search, here and there for the hidden alternatives that meet your needs just right until you are covered under your employment (and congrats on getting the job, too, in this economy!) Look, for your convenience, here is a short article found in the insurance section of a handy site on how to go about looking for health insurance, with some bulleted and resourceful info: http://yourhandymanzone.com/Your_Handyman_Zone_Project_Home_Improvement_Funding_Loans_Insurance_Coverage_HealthInsInfo.htm Hope this helps! . Source(s): The Internet. Just whatever is available online and what I have on my mind, including the inclusion of relevant sites, like the one cited that came into existence from my efforts, which is intended to be useful. Helping people get the relevant info they want is great.
- First I suggest you try with your local health insurance department. See what plans you are eligible to apply for. Like for example here in NY, we have Healthy NY which is a state-sponsored health insurance program provided by private insurers. However there's an income limit. If you are not eligible to apply for state-run programs, I suggest you check out short-term health insurance plans. Just so you'll have coverage until you find another job. But these plans generally don't cover preventive care. If you want comprehensive health care coverage, check out private insurers. If you are generally healthy and want to save on your monthly premiums, take a look at high deductible health plans. Just make sure they allow you to cancel any time (or until July) without any fee.
