What is a good dental insurance company?
My wife needs some dental work and her insurance doesn't cover dental. She has put it off to long and now is going to need a lot of work done. I don't know what kind to get or if I should get a dental plan instead of insurance. Get it with or with out a waiting period, etc. Does anyone have dental insurance they can recommend. Thanks

- They don't exist, dental insurance does not exist. You prepay the 1st two years, then you get the work done. You are basically self-insuring your dental care. I was offered a dental plan, $72 per month for me & wife, very limited coverage 1st two years (2 cleanings per yr, 1 set of xrays per patient). That's $2592 for all that. Any major procedures after that carried a hefty co-pay. Read the fine print on any dental plan you consider and evaluate the TRUE cost of the plan.
- There are no individual dental insurance policies that do not have any waiting periods. Most have a wait of 6 months for basic procedures and 12 months for major procedures. After the wait they'll pay 80% for basic and 50% for major procedures. Even those policies that do not have a waiting period will have a graduated benefit period. This means the first 12 months they'll pay 10%, the second 12 months they'll pay 30%, and thereafter they'll pay 50% of the charges for the major procedures. Dental plans, however, do not have a waiting period because they are discount plans (the providers agree to giving you a discount off of their regular price). You may want to check out a dental school, where she can get good service by students who are supervised by a dentist. The cost is usually very reasonable but will vary by school.
