what would be better, cheaper in the long run for insurance?

My step father can add me to his health ins plan through work but to add a dependent its an extra 150 a month. I would be paying that of course, as Im 23. after the 150 a month, the plan pays for everything after 10 dollar co pays, no dedectibles etc. OR I could get my own private high deductible major medical plan, one just in case something huge happens, with like a 7 to 10k deductible. This would cost like 55 a month. For someone who goes for a physical, pap one a year and a dermatologist and 1 another specialist 2 times a year. What do you think would be cheaper overall? Would the coverage for the specialists make the 150 a month worth it?? The private one is through Humana and I would pay everything out of pocket until the deductible which I would never meet, but there just for something catastrophic

  1. Careful with private insurance not offered by employers. Theses companies have serious complaints from people that state they are denying them for everything. Only go through a company that you know the name of if you consider a private plan. Wish you would have mentioned the name. But a private plan, even with this high deductible would be much more expensive through a good private company. Sounds like you are better off under your dads plan at work. No scams with company health plans. ------------- Everyone is different. I went with a high deductible plan for many years when I was young. Just make sure you have 6 months worth of living expenses in a saving account or a cd for a medical emergency first. Don't get the high deductible plan without this. You'll have to make your own decision. Humana is a good company. I did have an emergency. I paid out of pocket. But since I had insurance, the hospital reduced the fee to "customary" charges. This reduced the hospital fees by almost half. If you had no insurance at all, you would have to pay whatever the hospital billed you.
  2. The private one probably does not cover pregnancy. Since the cost difference ($95) is roughly $1000 per year and a pregnancy without insurance costs approximately one thousand dollars, if there is at least a 10% chance of pregnancy, it is worth getting his plan if it covers pregnancy.
