Is it possible to get a health insurance policy for just a child in Texas in 2011?

I was just told that I need to have a policy for both myself and my child, even though I already have coverage through work. Clarification: My new job will cover me 100% but will charge over $500 a month for one child. When I was looking for a policy for my child, the insurance agent told me that I would have to purchase a policy for both of us, not just my child. Is the insurance agent mistaken?

  1. Your child is covered under your health policy through your work. Why do you want to pay for a separate policy? Who told you that your child was not covered by your group health plan? You should call your state insurance board and make sure that is correct. I dont know if the employer group plan can drop a child from their policy but I guess it is possible. If you qualify, there is S-Chip for low income children.
  2. Only if it's through CHIP - welfare health insurance. Here in Texas, thanks to the Health Reform Act, no insurance company will sell a "child only" policy. And actually, it's not just Texas - it's throughout the entire USA. How's that hope-y change-y thing working for ya??
  3. Your agent was not mistaken. You have two, and only two options: a. Pay over $500 per month to have your child covered through your job. b. Pay whatever it costs to purchase a policy for both you and one of your child's parents (either you or the other parent). You cannot get the insurance for the child from one source and the insurance for yourself from another.
  4. I don't know if the employer group plan can drop a child from their policy but I guess it is possible.
