Health Insurance in Texas?
I'm looking into finding out more on TEXAS law on health insurance. I was just told that my husband wouldn't be able to have his step-daughter on his insurance any longer. 1. She is receiving Child Support....but the biological father doesn't hold on to his job longer then 6 months and he's not paying right now...and he's just not reliable...period! 2. My husband has been raising her since she was 2 months old, she is now 16. Is this possible to Health Insurance to do this? I know we have options like...1. adoption-which will give full credit to my husband. We haven't done this cause the sperm donor doesn't want him to give up...considering he doesn't fight to see her or anything. 2. Medicaid; or 3. have the sperm donor have insurance on her....like I said...he isn't RELIABLE!!

- "Option" 2 is probably not an option. Medicaid eligibility is based on total household income, of everyone living in the household, whether or not they will be on medicaid. If the income of you and your husband is too high, then no one in the same household as you and your husband can get medicaid.
- It depends on how the employer sets the plan up. I'm here in Texas, and MY husband's employer still allows step children to be covered under THEIR group plan. If the employer dropped coverage for dependents, then it's possible to do this. But if the child lives with you, AND the employer covers dependents, then I think there's a miscommunication somewhere. LOTS of stepkids are covered under a stepparents' insurance here in Texas. You just have to furnish proof that a. the child is YOURS and b. you're legally married to your husband.
