Confused about TSA/Airport security (first time flying since 10+years) EASY 10 PTS!!!!?

What are the process steps of going through security line in the airport? If it matters, i'm going on SFO airport and its an international flight... So after i check my ticket/passport in at the front office, and i have to go through security like everyone else, what happens here is what confuses me... Is it A) you have a choice of getting a full pat down B) you have a choice of going through the full body scanning NUDE C) BOTH? D) everyone has to go to the metal detectors right?

1. You go through either a metal detector or the full body scanner, the staff just randomly select people for the body scanner, or, like they did the other day, everyone in my line went through the scanner. You're not nude in it, you walk in, it's completely see through, you put your hands above your head and they take an x-ray of your body. It's over in 5 seconds.
2. Just so you're prepared, you will need to show your passport and ticket once again when you get to the TSA line, so keep them handy. You will have to remove your shoes, so keep that in mind when deciding what to wear. You will also have to have your laptop computer out unless you have one of the specially made backpacks that is laptop accessible. Getting "patted down" only happens if the scanner or metal detector and wand turn up something that they cannot identify any other way.
3. Everybody goes through the metal detectors and then they randomly (or not so randomly at times) pick people for unconstitutional extra search, which means you have a choice between being letting them see you naked, being groped, or missing your flight.
