- Actually AARP DOES have a Medicare D plan - several in fact. Check out the link below to find one in your area. I work in long-term care and deal with Med D plans on a daily basis. The AARP MedicareRx Preferred plan (through UnitedHealthCare) is one I would recommend for most people. They cover more drugs than just about any other plan and I've never had a problem getting prior authorization for specialty drugs or approval for non-formulary medications either. I don't know if it's the best program for everybody, but it will work well for most. It's like the Honda Accord of Med D plans - not especially flashy but you won't have any drama.
- AARP Medicare Part D plan is just a cleverly marketed United Healthcare plan. Go to medicare.gov and use the search engine to help you decide. The 2011 plans should be loaded soon.
- It's not that easy. If there was a best plan I wouldn't have to contract with all of the plans; I could just sell that one plan and spend much less time each year going through the certification process. AARP will be available next year but they will have only 2 plans instead of 3. Also, the other United Health plans that are not branded AARP will not be available. You (or have an agent that works with all plans) need to do an analysis of the available plans. You need to look at total cost as well as customer service. You can't go by name alone. Each person has different medications which means the best plan for that person could be any of the available plans. It will also be different depending upon which state you reside. In my state the AARP branded Medicare Supplements and Medicare Advantage plans are among my best sellers but I sell very few of their Part D plans. I just don't find them cost effective.
- AARP is not in the insurance business. They only promote United Health Care for money. You should check with an independent insurance agent where you live and find out what plans are available. There will be fewer plans available next year. Look at the websites which discuss Medicare and the health care law. http://healthreform.kff.org/ http://dpc.senate.gov/dpcissue-hri.cfm http://www.healthcare.gov/
