Why are some people so STUPID at parades????
A women was seriously injured because someone thought it was FUNNY to shoot a horse in the parade with a BB gun. This poor woman could have been killed!! Please tell me what in the sweet name of Jesus, would posses a person to do such a hatefull thing???? Here is the story: Tragedy Strikes At Greenville Parade By Bob Evans VION&HR Everything was going great at the 22nd Annual Country Christmas Parade. The kids both young and older were having a great time and enjoying all the activities. The streets were lined with spectators and the city park was full of vendors and Country Christmas participants. Then towards the end of the parade, something went all wrong. Tragedy hit hard on one of the riders on horseback. One of the horses spooked and threw its rider onto the pavement. Leila Lindsey of High Springs, Florida was thrown from her horse “Blessing” with the horse ending up stepping on her chest and left hand. EMS medical personnel responded while Lindsey's husband Ellis Lindsey tended to his fallen wife. Leila Lindsey was carried by ambulance to an area where Life flight could transfer her to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital to have her injuries cared for. She suffered cuts to her head, bruises on several parts of her body and some broken bones in her left hand. She was put on life support and transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. After several tests and CT scans, it was determined by TMH specialists that she suffered no permanent life threatening injuries and she was kept overnight at the hospital for observation and other tests run the next morning. Sunday afternoon December 9th, Lindsey was discharged from the hospital to go home. Members of the Madison County Sheriff's Posse rounded up the loose horse and took it back to the starting point of the parade so it could be loaded on a horse trailer and taken to Emerald Acres Paso Fino Ranch north of Greenville. There relatives of the Lindsey family came up to the ranch Saturday evening and transported all of their horses back home to High Springs, Florida. A special bank account has been set up at Capital City Bank 660 Northeast Santa Fe, High Springs, Florida 32643 to help the family with medical expenses incurred from the accident. If you would like to donate anything to help the family make your checks out to Leila Lindsey and mail them to the bank at the above address. No one really knows what happened, but it is believed that someone fired a BB gun and struck the horse in the neck. No one has been identified as being responsible, but the Madison County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident. At present no charges have been filed against anyone and the Sheriff's Department is asking everyone who was in the area where the incident took place that if they have any information to call the Sheriff's Department. What makes this story so unusual is Lindsey was riding a breed of horse that is known worldwide as a people friendly horse. It's reputation as being the “Rolls Royce” or the “Cadillac” of the horse world and the smoothest riding horse in the world with hardly any bad traits, adds to the theory that someone deliberately spooked the horse. Lindsey was competing in an annual event in the Country Christmas Parade called “Pasos On Parade”. For the past 2 years she and her horse “Blessing” have won the title as being the “Best of the Best” in the competition at Greenville. This proves that both her and the horse and rider were experienced in participating in parades. Both Lindsey and “Blessing” have competed for the past 5 years in the event at Greenville and she has ridden the horse in dozens more parades across the State of Florida without having any problems what-so-ever with the horse. If you would like to send get well cards or letters to Leila Lindsey or her family you can just address and mail them to (Leila Lindsey – P. O. Box 1761 - High Springs, Florida 32655.) Lisa M., the horse reared, she fell off & the horse fell on her. The injuries were unkown at the time. Brooke F., PLEASE tell me you just didn't say horses are stupid animals???? That is really FAR from the truth!! Lisa, I not debating, just trying to tell you what I have been told. It seemed odd to me as well. But, maybe they had taken all precautions. I don't exactly know what her condtion was at the time of the accident. I personally know just falling off would take the breath out of me. This is a very nice lady, who would do anything to help anyone. That is why I am so devestated of the ignorace of the shooter. The police are looking for this person & they are hopefully going to charge him with a felony. Really, this would be considered an Assult with intent to harm, Endangerment & Assult with a deadly weapon. What a Pud!!! Aoifa, there was a witness. As for the rest I don't know. Maybe because of the previous years of a safe parade.

- that sounds like someone did fire a BB gun at the horse.
- Very stupid indeed but one thing made me wonder, how do you go from being on life support that night and get discharged the next day? Surprise - I agree "stupid" is somewhat lacking in decribing the mentality of some people. As for the life support, first thing I thought of was "mmm must have Anthem insurance, ha ha!" Ghost Seeker - I'm not disputing the woman got badly injured and was lucky she wasn't killed - I'm just musing the point that if medical staff deem you critical enough for life support, they shouldn't be sending you home the next day - that's all - not looking to start some massive debate on health care.
- "Stupid" is not the word would use. That word implies a certain amount of ...well... stupidity. What that person did was more evil and warped than stupid. There is no WAY the shooter didn't know the horse would react to a BB. The person was malicious and probably ought to be caught and prosecuted not only for causing harm to the rider, but also for animal cruelty. If that woman were to die, I would have qualms about calling it murder. To Lisa, I would bet the reporter simply used the wrong terminology. It's pretty common that they don't really know what they're talking about.
- In general, people are stupid. They really have no common sense when it comes to horses because horses are "just a stupid animal". Well, they are also very beautiful, very LARGE animals that can do a great deal of harm if caused to do so. Bottom line: I'd like to have seen the shooter of that gun on the horse, and see what he/she thinks about it. Better yet, let him get shot w/ the BB gun- the horse doesn't deserve that.
- thats EVIL I was thinking bout riding in the 4th july parade but not know It musta been close to the city cuz anybody that lives around horses wuda known better
- Sweetheart, this is why experienced horse people go overboard for safety. We know there are dangerous idiots out there, and we protect our animals against them by not taking them into mass display. Horsemen spend decades listening to teenagers whining because they can't ride in the parade. An incident like this explains why smart owners say no. We accept that the world is a dangerous place and it's our job to protect our equine dependents. A horse trial is one thing, and a Christmas parade is another.
- I've long ago given up trying to figure humans out - horses are much easier! However, after reading the news story you posted, here's what I concluded: 1) No one knows for sure what happened - it is only BELIEVED that someone shot the horse w/a bb gun, but no one saw. No one handling or in care of the horse reported any obvious signs of injury to the horse. (I've been shot by a bb gun from several feet away & it left a mark through my chaps! I would have to think it would have left a mark on a horse). 2) Leila wasn't wearing a chest protector. Why not? They are small & light weight enough to go under a parade costume, it could even have been incorporated into her costume. We ALWAYS wear a chest protector whenever we're out on the trails - not only on the cross country course. 3) Her & Blessing have been doing this for 5yrs or longer and have won several awards - maybe someone else wanted the title. As sick as that sounds, but it's not that far fetched for someone to do almost anything to win - look at Tonya Harding of ice skating fame taking a crow-bar to that other competitor's knee. I really hope that we don't jump to conclusions about what happened. I hope that our world isn't becoming that stupid/scary where we have people not thinking and doing something just to "see what happens". I sure hope that it was someone being just plain stupid and thinking they'll get a chuckle by spooking the horse. I hope that they realized that it's not funny at all and will never do it again. And I sure do hope that Leila is feeling better and back to riding Blessing soon.
- Excuse you, I don't want to suggest that the life of a horse is worth more than that of a woman, but face it, the horse was also endangered. The shooter was dealing with an experienced parade animal who has faced plenty of fireworks, but another creature likely would have panicked, broken his knees or neck along with the car he crashed into, etc. The lessons here are that the we must protect our animals against dangerous humans, and that our own animals can't protect us against guns, knives, and sickos.
- Omg why on earth would someone do that! It's common sense that you don't shoot BB guns at people or animals regardless or species or anything like that! It's just plain dumb! That poor horse and rider! I hope they recover emotionally, spiritually and physically all right! Btw where did you read this story?
- This is exactly why I hate riding in parades. Honestly, you can control your horse/mule, its the rest of the idiots out there that you have to deal with. Why chance anything, I work with enough insane ppl after hours to know I don't want to go out after dark ;)
- What kind of an IDIOT would do that????? There is no exuse for something that dangerous. We all have fallen hard without some evil, idiot shooting the horse with a BB gun... Best wishes to that poor lady, and I hope that jerk didn't prevent her from ever riding again, it wasn't her horse's fault.
- in short: people are stupid, selfish, idiotic assholes.
- I ended up riding a green horse in a parade for a friend of mine this summer and a helicopter zoomed above us, so close to the ground, coming from behind. And there were a ton of horses in the parade. And no forewarning. It was really scary, but luckily none of the horses freaked out TOO badly.
- Poor woman! ARGH! 4 years ago someone sprayed my 3 yr old daughter's horse with water in a parade because they thought her horse looked hot. Her dad and I were walking next to her and we still couldn't stop it in time, the horse reared and she fell onto the pavement. Ambulances came it was horrible, fortunately she walked away. I will never ride or let my children ride in a parade again. Too many stupid people!
- good lord thats nuts he or she needs a bb in their behind
- The question is was it someone in the horse world with a jealous grudge, or a disgruntled spectator? People scare me with their disregard for horses and the people around them. I don't know if it is ignorance or malice or both. I'm just very glad I have a calm if cheeky critter who has taken to bomb-proof training very well. Not sure how he would stand up to a BB though, yeesh. Poor lady.
- I had the same questions as others- how can someone be put on life support, then a cat scan done revealing that there were no life threatening injuries and she was off lifesupport and sent home the next day????It is very odd. about the accident, unfortunly there are alot of people who do things around horses and do not think about how the horse will react to it.It is a very sad story, but I would be cautious of sending in anymoney or anything to this lady, especially to a P.O. box number...
- well, let's be thankful that the shooter wasn't so stupid as to use real bullets. i am suspecting that since she won 2 years in a row, a competitor hired someone to shoot the horse so that the competitor could win instead of leila winning for the 3 year in a row... people these days.
- A little girl died earlier this year in a parade in Tucson, AZ. The person who was driving a pair of draft horses behind her lost control. The drafts ended up bumping into her horse, the girl was 6,7,8? When the horse reared she was thrown under the draft horses feet. I get mad when I see people riding in parades on horses that are in obvious distress, I think it is a danger to both the horses and the people. Can we say people can be morons? We were having a party at my parents place and one of the younger boys was throwing rocks at my horse. When I asked him why? Because the horse was there and not moving. That was why he was throwing rocks. People can be idiots! I hope the girl is able to recover.
- that's terrible! people have no compassion or respect for horses and it makes me angry.
