What to do for acute toothache on Sunday night?
My husband has really bad toothache pain and the only thing that is relieving it at all is ice water but I know that using ice water is only increasing the length of time it will hurt... but stopping the ice water causes too much pain for him to put up with so he gets the water again... We're also students with NO dental insurance and NO medical insurance except the really crappy Student insurance offered by our university (Ameritas) which doesn't have a dental part. We also have NO money because we live on student loans... Any ideas? We live in Lincoln, Nebraska if it matters. University dental center is expensive; they won't see him for free; it will most likely cost hundreds for a root canal. I already thought about Oragel but... does it work if it's on a tooth that has a filling on it? It's not an open cavity. Would putting it just on the gum help?

- Take Ibuprofen (Advil Liquidcaps) works all the time for me!
- call some dentist in the am, I had that issue once and it was a back tooth. It only cost about $45 to get it pulled. call around to some offices and tell them you want it pulled.. I am sure there is one out there that wont screw ya around. until then, orajel city! max strength!! That and brushing it for a while might get out any thing on it cuzing addtl pain! good Luck
- Try Tylenol or Asprin.......Maybe some Oral Jell on his gums.....
- take salt and peroxide and mix the two...gargle, concentrating on the infected tooth. rinse. continue every 30 mins til subsides. also cold is better than heat ....keep icing it. also you pour whiskey on the affected tooth
- It sounds more like a financial problem rather than a dental problem. My only advice would be to refer to your network. If you have anyone who personally knows a dental professional, you may be able to get a bit of a break. Otherwise, you may want to look to family for some temporary financial support. I ended up having to rely on family to get my sheered tooth fixed. I myself have a student insurance that doesn't have dental coverage. If he needs a root canal, it probably won't help to numb it with ice. The infection is far to deep below the gum line. I tried taking prescription-free pain relievers and they seemed to help to an extent (I had a root canal done some time back). It's best to have that taken care of as soon as possible. I would suggest you inform the dentistry of the urgency once you get a hold of one.
- You have no choice but to see a dentist. A dental abscess can spread to your brain and cause death in extreme cases. Call the public/County hospital to find out where you can get inexpensive dental care. Miss a few meals to pay for it if you have too!
- Ambisol is a temporary pain reliever for toothaches and can be bought over the counter. You apply it directly on the gums/teeth. Now, he could have just a cavity. The sooner this is taken care of the better. If it is a cavity, he may be able to get it taken care of for less than $100. And if it is a cavity getting it taken care of early as possible, he may be able to avoid a root canal (if that determination has not been made yet), thereby saving you what would amount to be many hundreds of dollars. I would definately have it checked out VERY SOON by a dentist - at least get the dental checkup, which would probably be around $50 or less. There are also low cost dental insurance available, so I would also look at this as well. - The root canal of the tooth is infected. Take an anti-biotic to help it go away. Also oxycotin will stop the pain.

- I live in Lincoln too and there isn't a lot you can do for a tooth ache on a Sunday night.I had a tooth ache with a tooth that partially broke off due to a bad filling job.Orajel was the only relief that I could find.It worked really well. But don't listen to the person that said steal it.
