Scan Medical Insurance

What is safest anesthesia to give an 11 yr old child with autism. He needs to undergo a full body bone scan.?

My son needs to have a full body bone scan with contrast as he has a condition called multiple enchondroma and the treating dr. wants to see if he has any anywhere else besides his finger. I am very concerned to get through the scan and not traumatize him. We tried 4MG valium for the MRI and he had to sit still for 30 minutes. It was extremely difficult to get through. 4MG of Valium did not put him to sleep. This could be an hour and a half long. Can someone advise the safest alternative. My sister in law who is a nurse suggested Oral Versed to relax him and then a Propafol drip. I want to see what others say. I will of course check with his Dr. and Psychiatrist but wanted to become educated on all the options out there so i can make a good choice. Thanks

  1. Obviously the person administering this anesthesia will decide, you will not be involved.
  2. I have a son with Autism as well but he is 32 years when he had to have a MRI and a Cat-Scan they gave him 2 adavan,he was 13 at the time and that wouldn't keep him John still. I hope that maybe that will work for your boy.
  3. I recommend asking this question on a Yahoo Group about autism biomed that has a large amount of members. They can can tell you much more than an answer you are going to get here. Definitely any and all nitrous gas is avoided in the autism recovery arena. I have seen many horror stories from using that.
