I need individual dental insurance?

I am self employed and pay for my own insurance. I go through Carefirst Blue Choice, however, their plan only offers the dental network plan, which allows me to receive a discount when I go to the dentist. I need actual dental insurance so I don't have to spend $600 every time I need a filling or $1500 every time I need a root canal (I have a condition with my teeth that causes me to get these often). What can I do? I've been doing research, but not having any luck. Any Dentist's out there have good advice?

  1. I haven't seen any private dental policies that actually pay out more than they cost. They have severe coverage limitations (just like group dental coverage!) and waiting periods. but $600 is way on the high side for a filling, and $1500 is on the low side for a root canal. You might want to see if you have a local dental school.
  2. Dental insurance isn't cheap :-( And the problem is that a lot of policies limit the maximum amount they'll pay in a year, and/or have a waiting time before more extensive procedures like root canals. I had individual dental insurance through Anthem's Dental Blue plan a while ago, which was the best I could find at the time, and it was okay, making me pay $40 or so per filling. But the premiums were around $30 a month and it was capped at paying out a maximum of around $1000 a year, I think. So it was good if you needed just enough dental work per year that you got the full $1000 reimbursement while paying $360 in premiums, but nothing beyond that was covered.
