I don't know what to do with my huge medical bill?!?
I went through United Healthcare's website and selected a psychiatrist from the list they have. Now I find out that the woman charges at least $250/session and I'm a student--I can hardly pay to sit around and do nothing. I don't know what to do! The insurance covered some of it but won't cover all of it. Out of the $750 bill I have now, they're saying they won't pay $603 of it! Does anyone have any experience with this? Please help!!!

- So...your portion is just under $150.00 That's really not "huge'. If you can't pay the $150 in a lump sum....see if the dr office will set up a payment plan with you. Since you are a student...go see if your campus health services or campus health department has a psychiatrist you can see through the school. That's usually much cheaper than going to a private dr.
- Ok..first of all talk with the provider and set up a payment plan. Secondly, you need to know the terms of your insurance. It probably only pay for a certain number of visits per year. Call the insurance company to be sure that the claims are filed correctly and have them explain exactly why they paid the amount that they did. You also probably have a deductible to pay. Make the insurance company explain the payment (or lack ther of).
- It sounds like you might have a deductible to meet for the year. Most insurance plans have a deductible (a certain amount of out of pocket expenses) that you have to pay before the insurance pays for the expenses. I would talk to the doctor and tell them that you need a payment plan in order to pay off the bills and hopefully they will work with you. You probably won't get out of it but they can let you pay over time.
- Sorry, but it's up to you to know what your policy's coverage is. Sounds like you just assumed that "the insurance will pay all." Reality is otherwise.
- Try to see if the hospital will offer you a payment plan or if you qualify for bill assistance.
- You made an erroneous assumption that services of an in-network provider are fully covered. They're usually not, until you have met your deductible for the year, and paid co-pays. It was your responsibility to check your plan's coverage limits before you asked for services. Now you have a bil which you must pay.
- Instead of going through the web site pick up the phone and call United Healthcare. Maybe they're not covering the $603, but maybe you are not responsible for that amount.
