Is AARP really an unbiased advocacy group?

They peddle health insurance for a fee paid by the insurance companies. What's in it for them? http://products.aarp.org/health/ Addison Barry Rand is the new CEO of AARP. He makes $575,000 a year. http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2009-03-12-aarp_N.htm Barry Rand has also given $4300 to Barack Obama. http://www.opensecrets.org/indivs/donor_lookup.php?name=Rand,%20Addison

  1. Its a for-profit insurance company
  2. $4,300.00 is nothing compared to his earnings. He probably gave to other causes too. We need health insurance reform. The AMA, ADA and American Cancer Society support reform also.
  3. they are as unbiased as the NAACP
  4. AARP IS AN ADVOCACY GROUP. IT DOES WHAT IT THINKS IS BEST FOR RETIRED PEOPLE. EVER HEAR OF THE DONUT? THERE IS A GAP IN MEDICARE MEDICATION COVERAGE THAT WOULD BANKRUPT A LOT OF PEOPLE, OR MAKE THEM STARVE. HEALTH CARE REFORM WILL FIX IT.
  5. "Unbiased advocacy" is an oxymoron. Please re-tool and try again
  6. no, AARP will support legislation that benefits older americans. But keep in mind, most of their efforts make sense, despite your unwillingness to accept this fact.
  7. Whatever made you think that they were unbiased and/or claimed to be such?
  8. Nay, narily.
  9. If they take positions on both sides, they probaly are unbiased. It's funny but right wingers didn't complain about AARP bias back when it was endorsing Bush's Medicare prescription drug handout.
  10. AARP is unbiased about helping seniors. They are not wanting Medicare to go broke, which is where its headed. You think $575,000 is a huge salary? Look at the CEO of United Health Care Stephen Hemsley - UnitedHealth Group Total Compensation: $3,241,042 supplemental retirement benefit was frozen based on his current age and average base salary and converted into a lump sum of $10,703,229."
  11. The blue haired nation is looking more like republican mafia these days.
  12. No, they are an extremely liberal biased lobby group. There are no two ways about, just look at their history of support. They even support the death panels which would impact more than half of their membership. But they don't care, so long as they can get socialism to become the daily routine in this country.
