Why would we have to pay a penalty if we refuse to purchase affordable health insurance?

I thought America was the land of the free? Why then, does the government have the right to tell me that I HAVE to purchase health insurance? Just wondering.

13. Good question. I'm 40 years old and for most of my life I haven't carried health insurance. I'm healthy as a horse with no problems, and all of a sudden the government is going to tell me I have to take out health insurance ? How is that affordable if I had no health insurance to pay for to begin with ? It's absurd. God bless.
14. It is one of the options being considered. As to why you would have to pay? Because Obama was elected with a mandate to change the healthcare system. First of all, too many people do not know that Obama wants to make insurance more available to all. Second, of course universal health-cover sucks. That is why we in Western Europe have it. We think, hmm, our healthcare system sucks. I know, lets keep it. I guess that is the same with Japan and Canada as well. FACT - the USA spends more on healthcare PER PERSON than any other nation on the planet. FACT - the US has higher death rates for kids aged under five than western European countries with universal health coverage. That means that a dead American four year old would have had a better chance of life if they were born in Canada, France, Cuba, Germany, Japan etc, all of which have universal health coverage.
