Why does contrast for a CT scan make you feel heat all over your body? What is the mechanism for this?
Zena, But WHY does iodine make you feel flushed? What is the mechanism?

- In some contrast media there is Iodine which can make you feel warm or it could be whatever else is being mixed with the media. I have been out of the x-ray field for quite a few years and back then we used primarily Iodine and always had to ask if the patient was allergic.
- That's a great question, and frankly I don't know the precise mechanism for this. The alteration in osmolarity from Omnipaque may have an indirect effect on this typical reaction, but I beg your pardon, I can't seem to find any literature suggesting the specific physiology of this.
- Hey! I found this web site for you to look at. It should give you all of the info you need.
- It can be an allergic reaction... I had a CT scan w/contrast a couple of years ago... I had the same experience... About 15 minutes after the scan was finished... I had additional symptoms of hives and swelling and had to be injected with Benadryl... About 30-40 minutes later the symptoms were gone completely... Amazing stuff that Benadryl... Yes, granny.. I think iodine was the culprit.. Although, I had the same thing done previously and there were no symptoms.. It's interesting how we can develop an allergy to something we were never allergic to.... Edit: Two thumbs down for describing a personal, Dr. confirmed experience with contrast dye? Which just happens to be the subject? You guys over in "medicine" are a tough audience... :-)
- CONTRAST AGENTS ARE IODINE BASED Contrast agents are iodine based and are absorbed by abnormal tissues. They make it easier for the doctor to see tumors within the brain tissue. There are some (rare) risks associated with contrast agents and you should make sure that you discuss this with the doctor before arriving for the examination. http://listen-up.org/med/ct_mri.htm SCANS WILL IODINE DYES MAKE YOU WARM AND FLUSHED.
