- You have to call an insurance provider that's not part of your employer-provided plan. Aetna may offer coverage that's not linked to your employer, and Blue Cross/Blue Shield can provide insurance. You just have to pay the premiums yourself w/o your previous employer paying a portion of it for you.
- Call the HR from the company you quit. They may or may not be obligated to offer you COBRA. COBRA is Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act. "COBRA provides certain former employees, retirees, spouses, former spouses, and dependent children the right to temporary continuation of health coverage at group rates. This coverage, however, is only available when coverage is lost due to certain specific events. Group health coverage for COBRA participants is usually more expensive than health coverage for active employees, since usually the employer pays a part of the premium for active employees while COBRA participants generally pay the entire premium themselves. It is ordinarily less expensive, though, than individual health coverage." The coverage is not free and not cheap either, but it is less than medical treatment without health insurance.
- sometimes you are given the opportunity to continue the insurance but more than likely since you quit, probably not available to you
- Pay for COBRA (you only have up to 3 months to elect this from the date your insurance ended) or get another job, or buy a personal policy.
- you should have gotten COBRA information for continuing your health insurance - you only have 60 days to start it up, so contact your old company HR dept asap and tell them you need the info - you will have to pay 102% of the full premium retroactive to July 1st and going forward
