- It is a defined benefit plan and as such has limitations to what they'll pay. The only pro is you can get this plan if you have medical conditions so severe that a regular insurance plan will not accept you. It is then better than nothing. The premium may be lower each month but it is expensive for what you get compared to a regular plan. A common scenario would be if you get in a bad accident and wind up in the intensive care unit for the average 2 day stay and a regular hospital bed for the average 3 day stay. This would cost a minimum of $30,000. Cinergy will pay $5000 and you'll pay $25,000+. If you get a major medical, such as a $5000 deductible plan with $2500 co-insurance all you'll pay is the deductible and co-insurance, which would be a maximum of $7500. Still a lot of money but nowhere near what you'd pay with Cinergy.
