Can a health insurance agent in Florida sell himself a policy from the companies he represents?

If he is a broker for multiple carriers, can he purchase a policy for him and his family and get commission on that sale?

  1. There may be some conflict of interest rules that he might be breaking that can get him fired. It is never a good idea to do this sort of thing, because it is VERY easy for someone to claim fraud!
  2. Yes that is perfectly acceptable as long as he has sold enough policies to other people. He cannot get an insurance license and appointment from a company just to sell himself a policy, but most agents have a policy on themselves that they sold themselves and received commission for.
  3. Yes, it's perfectly legal for an agent to purchase a policy from a company that he/she represents. All he/she needs is for another agent/rep of the company witness his signature. Yes, he/she also gets paid the commission, although, he/she might want to share some of the commission with the witnessing agent.
  4. Health insurance can be very tricky. Since I live in Tennessee I'm not sure about Florida regulations, so I recommend you call a local health insurance agent. http://www.americaschoicetoday.com/Health-Insurance.html They should be able to assist you.
  5. Absolutely. This is really less of a state issue than one regulated by each particular insurance company. I saw a discussion of this at www.insurance-forums.net
  6. Yes, a person can sell a policy to themselves. I run a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida agency. Unless the company he represents has some strange commission set up, he will get commission. We pay our agents commission on personal policies. Hope this helps.
