aetna insurance- adding domestic partner in VA?

My boyfriend works in DC. The company is based out of DC. We live in VA. He has Aetna health insurance and I am about to loose my insurance. I am pregnant. We live together and have a lease together. In Va I know they dont recognize domestic partners but in DC they do. Does anyone know (from what I read this is true) that the qualification of being a domestic partner can be based on where the company is located. does anyone know the policy?

  1. You need to find out whether your boyfriend's employer offers domestic partner benefits, and if so, what documentation needs to be shown to prove the relationship? (They could request things like joint bank statements, tax returns, a copy of your lease, etc.) It doesn't matter whether the employer is based in DC or Virginia - it matters whether they allow domestic partners to enroll in health insurance. Just because Washington DC has a domestic partner registry doesn't mean that every single employer located in DC offers domestic partner benefits.
  2. My suggestion is trying to absorb as much information as you can before making up your mind, here http://www.HealthInsuranceIdeas.info/free-online-health-insurance.htm is a good one.
