Why not perform full body computerized axial tomography scans on everyone to look for asymptomatic diseases?

Public Comments

  1. 1. It is a very expensive investigation 2. It exposes people to unnecessary radiation 3. There are lots of potentially dangerous but asymptomatic diseases, such as diabetes, which would not be detectable by CAT scan
  2. The potential benefit is far less than the cost of the test, cost of false positive findings, and radiation exposure
  3. The use of confirmatory tests to look for asymptomatic disease is poor practice on many different levels. We can get even more information by doing routing ex-laps on people, but I don't think this would turn out to be a good screening measure and neither would computerized tomography (whether axial or otherwise).
