Is the lifetime limit of $50,000 in my Medicare supplemental insurance plan reasonable?

As a retiree, my ex-company charges me $176/mo. for Aetna Medicare Supplemental insurance. They say the limit is more than enough since medicare covers almost all of potential medical expenses.

  1. Your company is correct. Medicare part A and B cover 99% of bills Your supplemental will pick up the odds and ends
  2. for most people that would be fine. there are those who, with an unexpected illness or accident, have well exceeded that limit.
  3. I would ask them what it would cost to go to the next increment of lifetime limit coverage. If you or your spouse had a catastrophic illness - such as cancer or stroke - it might not be enough. Most people want at least $500,000 supplemental coverage.
