Denied for health insurance! What do we do?!?

My husband lost his job recently, and therefore we also lost our health insurance. He now has a new job, however his new employer does not offer health insurance, so we are forced to find our own. We applied for an individual/family plan, but received notification that because of my husband's medical history (hyperthyroidism and depression) we were denied. The reason for my husband's denial:medical, the reason for my denial: family member was denied, the reason for our 3 yr old son's denial: parent was denied. I am pretty much betting that based on this, my husband is going to have a hell of a time finding any plan that will cover him. As far as myself and my son, I have reapplied to the same plan for just the two of us. I am hoping that at least we will be accepted, but what do you think our chances are, considering we were just denied (although apparently for no other reason than my husband was denied). When we first applied, we still had health insurance from my husband's previous employer... now we have been without coverage for the last 4 days. Can anyone tell me what options we have? We live in Virginia, by the way. We had an option for Cobra, but it was WAY too expensive for us.

  1. dont worry. obama will provide.
  2. The only other option I can think of would be for either your husband to keep looking for a job that will provide medical insurance, or for you to find a job that will provide medical insurance. Since you reapplied for the same plan under just you and your son, you may actually get picked up for it.
  3. Pray for Obama to win and your good to go!!!!
  4. Try a different plan. Most of them will just tell you they're not going to pay for his conditions for the first year or more... not just outright deny you. Keep trying different providers... Aetna, Blue Cross, United, etc. There are a lot of options. Why didn't you just continue your service from the employer? At least they would have had him on there already... you would have paid more, but you were already covered with them. I'd try calling them and see what they can do for you.
  5. Your husband needs to find a job with health insurance ASAP. They will have a group plan where you can't get denied unless you were previously uninsured, then they deny preexisting conditions. You may have a grace period of 68 days where you can have a gap in insurance and still be considered as having been previously insured. CHECK YOUR LOCAL LAWS, THIS MAY BE DIFFERENT FROM WHERE I LIVE. I learned the hard way. Switched from group to private and back to group because private insurance would not cover. Check to see if you can still go back to cobra until then. There may be a grace period. If you go uninsured and get insurance later, no preexisting conditions will be cover. It could lead to financial ruin. You will wish you had a chance to pay the expensive cobra premiums. You don't have time to mess around. See an insurance broker and make sure you understand the magnitude of your situation and your options.
  6. As long as you or your son do not have any major health issues then you should not have any problems obtaining coverage even if your husband has health issues. The best bet for your husband is to either take the COBRA offer (which will be less expensive with only him on the plan and less expensive in aggregate because the premiums for you and your son's individual policy will be very cheap) or to speak with an experienced independent health insurance agent that can help him compare quotes from many different companies and find one that will accept him. Different companies have different underwriting standards so it can pay to shop around. Here is some more resources on what to do if you are denied health insurance:
