Can I put my boyfriend of 3 years on my health insurance (provided by employer) in the state of Florida?
I work for a great company that provides health & dental insurance from the very first time you start the job. My boyfriend of three years that I live with, does not have any insurance & the company he works for, does not provide good ones, only health plans. So, a long question short, can I add him to mine if we live in Broward County, State of Florida.

- No, my girlfriend tried it. You have to be married or gay in a domestic partnership. Word of advice, make a prenup and get married at the courthouse, then you can add him to your insurance. If things go south, you'll have your prenup to make the divorce painless.
- Every state and insurance company is different. You are going to have to call your employee insurance co and ask. You will have to do this anyways to put him on, right? Most likely the answer is going to be no because you are not married.
- No unless you are married or you are gay!! How screwed up that the gay's have more rights than you. Go figure!!
- Only after the wedding
- If you company extends benefits to domestic partners, it may be possible. This is usually done to allow gay couples to get benefits for their partners, but can also include other couples. Talk to your HR department about this, and, if they do allow it, what you need to do to have him declared a domestic partner.
- Florida law does not stipulate that your employer has to add him on to your plan although you should contact your HR department to see if they will voluntarily add him on to the plan.
