  1. I'm a female, 59 yrs. I don't think there is any such thing as "affordable" health insurance. At my last job, they wanted $75.00 per WEEK to pay for health ins., (I made $16.00 per hour), and the coverage didn't even meet the minimum requirements for my state. If I could, I'd move back to England, where they have National Health (and dental). I had my first child there, got wonderful care at high tech hospitals, and twelve weeks of unemployment benefits, extended if my delivery was later than what the Dr. predicted, and no crushing debt to pay off afterward. The U.S., is the ONLY Westernized nation without Universal Health Care. Afghanistan*, Argentina, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Cuba, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iraq*, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Oman, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Ukraine and the United Kingdom The little asterisks for Afganistan and Iraq indicate that their universal health care is funded by the U.S. Adding Insult To Injury.
  2. At the age of 56, "affordable" is going to be relative. IF you are in perfect health, and not overweight, a GOOD low/no deductible plan is going to cost you about $600 to $700 a month. The less healthy you are, the more overweight you are, the more expensive the policy is, and at that age, it won't take a lot for the insurance company to flat out refuse to write you. You really need to sit down with a local, independent agent near you (find one at www.iiaa.org) and let THEM guide you, after asking you a bunch of questions. But if you've got a ton of maintenance prescriptions, and you're looking for a full coverage no deductible plan for $100 a month, it doesn't exist. If someone on the internet offers that to you, IT'S A SCAM.
  3. It’s no secret that health insurance tends to get more expensive the older you are. Of course, you and I both know that 56 isn’t really very old, but as far as the health insurance companies are concerned it’s a lot more risky to insure a 56-year-old than it is to insure a 25-year-old, so I’m afraid that your monthly premiums are going to be higher than you might like, even if you’re quite healthy. The fact is, however, that it’s hard to make recommendations or tell you what to expect without more information about your situation. The state you live in and your health history will have a lot to do with the affordability of your health insurance options. So rather than throwing out a dollar amount here that’s bound to prove misleading, I would suggest that you talk to a licensed agents in your area who represents several leading insurance companies. It doesn’t cost anything more to work through an agent and it can give you a much broader view of your options. If you’d like to explore your options online first, check out a licensed online agency like the one I work for, eHealthInsurance.com. Through our site, for example, you can get free quotes from leading companies, compare plans side by side, and apply for coverage online. We also have licensed agents available by phone who would be glad to talk you through your options. Our number is 1-800-977-8860. Best of luck, Amir M, licensed agent
