Which companies offer life insurance to clients who have chronic health problems?
I am 37 years old with a diagnosis of lupus (not flaring) with a history of minor kidney involvement, deep vein thrombosis, and high blood pressure. I have been trying to get life insurance but have been consistently denied by the major companies to which I have applied. Does anyone have any suggestions? The only suggestion I received from one company was the hint to purchase Accidental Death and Disability, and if my medical condition worsened, to "have an accident". I am hoping for better advice.

- There are many companies that offer (GI), Guaranteed Issue Life polices, most are whole life and in smaller limited amounts, usually up to $10k. No real health questions. If you die before the the first one or two years, at your death they will only refund the premiums you paid in, and a little interest. After this period, they will pay the full amount of coverage on the policy. You can get as many of these you want with several companies. Globe Life, American General. Home Beneficial etc, just look on line or yellow pages. These polices are designed for people with health problems or the aged. You may have to look harder for coverage because of your young age however.
- Accidental Death and Disabily policies only pay out in less than 3% of the time. In my opinion, not worth the money. You would be able to look at a Guaranteed Issue Policy, which does not require any medical under writing, however most companies require that you are at least 45 years old (depends on the company and where you live). As a warning, these policies can be expensive becuase the insurance company takes on the risk of insuring you know matter what. Your best bet is to contact a liscensed insurance broker and discuss your situation with them. They will have access to almost any company on the market and will be able to find something that will suit your need if it's available.
- Well, it might be possible to get coverage with the right company. Your best bet is to check with a few independent life brokers who have experience with higher risks. Then consider guarantee issue. We still don't know enough to even shoot from the hip. The kidney involvement doesn't sound promising (what are your labs like?), but the main thing that knocks people out at your age is if the diagnosis is recent (last 5 years or so). Insurance companies are looking for a longer history with infrequent flares and slow progression for the better offers. Good luck.
- I would advise you to talk to an independent agent that understands the underwriting guidelines of multiple companies. They can at least find out if you can get coverage with the different companies without you having to go through the application and rejection process.
