how does double medical insurance coverage work?

my wife is starting a new job and we are thinking of using the medical insurance at her new employer as well as keeping her covered under the existing plan. She doesn't have any major health issues, but does have a fair amount of routine visits that seem to add up over each year. WIll the additional insurance cover the balance 100%?

  1. The balance is covered 100% but might not be all paid by the one company. When someone is insured for the same interests twice, most companies don't allow that the insured gets double the money. If the insured needs $5000 to cover the bill, then $5000 is owed by the insurer and when they are aware of another insurer, the bill is shared. And they are aware, because you must disclose it or it is insurance fraud. Getting twice the money would go beyond the scope of being insured and it is considered a form of "Unjust Enrichment", which in court is used by insurance lawyers to get them off paying the (whole) bill, when another insurer paid it already, each might pay half.
  2. you must let them know of the other insurance and if/when they agree to take her on they'll split the costs and she'll get the same as with one insurance, just more headakes. I'd find a good one for little money and stick with that. Of ourse I am great at finding bargains :)
