Med-Cal told me you have to be 65 or disabled Wow, I live in Massachusetts now but I wanted to go to school in California and stay with family there. Here in Massachusetts its a law everyone has to have health care and if your poor its Free or cheap, I guess I should stay here.

- You have to be 65 or disabled for Medicare, not Medicaid. Here is the website to the Medicaid department, known in CA as Medi-cal: http://www.medi-cal.ca.gov/

- In CA, you have to be under the age of 21, have either children in the household under the age of 19 or be disabled for at least 30 days to qualify. You may be able to get some kind of coverage through your school. Ask at the student health center of your school. Aside from that, you would have to buy an individual policy. The cost would depend on the benefits you want and your health history.
- If you are plan to be in college, you may want to check out health insurance programs that are written through your school. United Healthcare has a plan available at many US schools. These student injury and illness plans provide wide ranging coverage and are designed to be affordable for college students. To check if your school is participating, go to www.UHCSR.com and enter your school name in the search box. You might also be interested in joining the American College Student Association (ACSA), a national organization for college students. They have lots of member benefits, including student health insurance. Their membership fee is affordable.
