What exactly is a CT scan is it a whole body scan or just used on a specific area? ?
and why does it say you may need an injection? I am having one in a few days and would like to know what to expect

- An IV contrast medium is sometimes given, the dye is injected to high- light certain parts of the body that are being scanned, you won't feel anything, maybe at most just a 'warm rush' sensation and perhaps a metallic taste in your mouth. During a CT scan, you lie on a table inside a doughnut-shaped machine called a gantry. An X-ray tube inside the machine rotates around your body and sends small doses of radiation through it at various angles. As X-rays pass through your body, different tissues absorb different amounts of radiation.
- It can be the whole body or just a part of it, depending on what is being investigated. They are not painful, you should feel nothing at all. They might want to inject you with a substance to highlight a certain area of your body if they cannot get a clear view of something. They generally last from 20mins upwards. A good chance to relax a little if truth be known, don't worry. Good luck.
- if you are having an injection this is normally to inject a dye for making things such as blood vessels or organs more visible during the scan. think of it as a combination of 2 x-rays at the same time. the results will be used by a computer to create a sort of transparent 3d picture of everything inside you without operating. normally used to identify things such as tumors or absences or spine examination. if you have kidney problems inform them before hand but one would assume you have been asked relevant questions. it may be a tad uncomfortable but is easily bearable if you relax. in fact the injection my be just to relax you. the doctors should have informed you what is was for, what it involved. do ask. it i painless and allows great insight without operating into what is going on inside your body. probably one of the greatest inventions of modern science. it i normally! a machine which hums a bit ( not that loud) and consists of a big doughnut like machine with a small hole through which is passed a sort of thin bed or trolley. you will be lying on it and passed through machine or machine will pass over you. can be cramped and a bit claustrophobic hence the injection? it should not take too long but do ask approx times etc. good luck.
- The above answers seem right. I know two people that had them and they were fine. It can be for a specific area. Good luck. xxx
- Good luck Wackyone, I hope everything goes well.
- a ct scan is like a giant polo mint that scans your body half way through they inject medication which allows them to get a good look at the organs in the body.i found it ok but an mri scan was something i would not want repeated.
- i have had 4. 3 of them i had to drink this white stuff that tasted a bit chalky and one i had a radio active injection, don`t get scared, both help highlight different things, i think the injection one is for the bones, and the drink is for the organs, but you`ll know what they`re looking for in your case, the scan is totally painless, you just have to lie still. i just closed my eyes and relaxed. i think i takes about 20 mins.good luck with your results.x
