What Dental Insurance Is Better?
My husband and I need to decide between Guardian and Delta Dental for a personal, family plan. All the insurance jargon is confusing. Anyone know which was is better? My husband is self employed... If there are other good plans besides delta or guardian, please share them with me! Also - my husband needs to have a lot of work done... implants, fillings, gum surgeries, etc.

- Your choice will rule mainly the kind of dental treatment procedures you have lined up. Obviously you would like to choose one that provides maximum coverage and the conditions attached are favorable. No insurance covers cosmetic dentistry or dental implants. It is proving much cheaper to make dental care travel to India or similar other countries. This link may be handy: http://www.dentalcare-indiatour.com/dentistry/
- 1. Guardian covers 100% of most of the procedures but there is an annual cap. 2. Usually, that cap is the same for each person under the plan (e.g., if it says that the annual cap is $1,000/-, it will be $1,000/- for each person). 3. You will have to pay out of pocket if you cross the maximum annual limit for a calendar year. 4. For Delta Dental there is a copay for every major procedure (e.g., crowns, dentures, bridges). 5. Under that category though, almost all of the insurances DO NOT cover the cost for any pre-existing condition. In other words, if you go to a dentist with a tooth already missing, they WILL NOT cover the cost partially to replace that tooth. However, if you have it taken by that dentist, it WILL be covered. 6. Also, almost all insurances cover 100% of the basic procedures (e.g., exam, x-rays, regular cleaning, simple fillings, etc.) 7. Therefore, I would say Guardian is a better choice if : i) you do not need a whole lot of work ii) you can spread it out over 8. Delta Dental will be good if you need a whole lot of work. 9. As far as I know Delta Dental has started to cover implants recently. 10. All insurance policies will require pre-authorization for major procedures. That request will have to be submitted by your dentist and there will be a wait period for that. 11. It is always better to talk to the Reps. over the phone with your questions, get the right info. and then compare. Good luck !!
