Scan Medical Insurance

Started a new job yesterday-uncertain of it already?

I know i havent given it much time yet, but im already getting major clues that this company is not what i thought it was going to be. First, they told me to get hired with them i needed to go through a local employment agency, i would work at their company for the first three months but during that time technically i am actually an employee of this employment agency. After 3 months i move up and become their employee-then i get insurance, 401k and all the benefits. I never heard of anything like this before but i thought, what the Hell i would give it a shot. Now i find out that just last month they rounded up all of their employees from the same said agency and fired them all at once. And now they are bringing in a whole new crew-me being one. Is that a good sign or a bad sign? Are they just doing this to keep a fresh stock of employees that they dont have to pay medical insurance/benifits/ for? Will i be gone in 90 days? Anyone delt with anything like this?

  1. Being an employee of an agency and then getting hired full time can be pretty common, but is sounds like this company is avoiding health insurance, benefits etc. If the employees are that replaceable, I would worry about working there. Always trust your gut when it comes to jobs, otherwise you get stuck somewhere you don't want to be. If I were you I would look around for a new job just in case, who knows, you might find something better.
  2. They hired you through a temp agency, and there is probably a very good chance that you won't last long. They are trying to avoid paying benefits. A company usually has the right to fire you whenever they want, but their practices sound unethical to say the least. I'm assuming you got nothing in writing, so you are probably out of luck. However, you may want to report them to the labor board so they can at least do an investigation.
  3. Sounds like you have the Kindergarten Jitters. The probationary period is pretty much standard practice these days. It protects both parties involved. Don't worry about it, you will not be gone in 90 days. All you have to think about is that it is very expensive to find and hire someone. The probationary period just lets them back out of the deal if you don't do your work.
  4. They are probably doing this so they can select some really good employees. It works both ways, it gives both parties a chance to check each other out. If a person is bought on board and given benefits etc, they they find out that this person will not be very good for the job and won't fit in, it is very tough to fire someone at this time. It is very costly to defend a wrongful termination situation even if the person was quite useless and cops a really bad attitude. The group prior to you could very well have been a barrel of B-Munches!
  5. It's not that unusual for a company to hire through an outside source. The employment agency goes through the pre-screening and interview process for the company. As far as firing all of the employees and hiring fresh ones from the agency...keep in mind that the company must pay the employment agency a premium for their employees. It doesn't make much sense that they're trying to keep from hiring the employees directly. Sandy
