Scan Medical Insurance

Today is my last day at my job and I need to find health insurance.?

I don't want to go with COBRA because it is too expensive. I only need major medical coverage but I don't want it to be from some rag tag company that will never pay out. Does anyone know about any options that aren't too expensive? I only need a couple months worth of coverage.

  1. Blue Cross, Blue Shield has some major medical coverages. They are 40% PPO policies. I had one for my son while he was in college and I was very happy with it. It was very well priced. I went ahead with COBRA when I retired because as you get older the above policies get very expensive. I didn't find anything that was any less than my COBRA policy. Good Luck to you!
  2. If you only need a couple of months you have two options. First option, the insurance company will notify you within 14 days if you qualify for COBRA. You have 60 days after your insurance terminates or you get the notification, whichever comes later, to decide to elect COBRA. If you do elect COBRA it will be effective starting the day you lost coverage and you will have to pay the premium from that day. So you will have coverage but you have to keep a watch for the deadline and not let it pass if you need coverage. You will pay less paying cash for a minor doctor visit or two compared to the premium of COBRA. Second option, visit a local independent agent for a short term medical plan. These plans are relatively inexpensive, they don't have all the bell and whistles of a major medical plan, but they will cover for unexpected catastrophic medical costs. These plans vary little between companies and the agent can explain any differences. There is no extra charge using an agent.
  3. There are a lot of companies that may have some higher deductible which will lower your premium. If you're pretty healthy that's probably the best way to go. Check out http://www.ez-insurancefinder.com they have some great info and offers quotes from top providers such as blue cross, aetna, humana, etc.
  4. There are several on-line services that can assist you in getting a quote. Two of the more reliable are : http://www.kqzyfj.com/click-2952034-10517499 http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-2952034-10359791 Because they specialize and partner with numerous health insurance providers, you are more likely to get better coverage at a better rate through them verses calling around to individual agents. I hope this helps!
  5. If you find COBRA too expensive, you’re not alone. A lot of people feel that way. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that if you have a pre-existing medical condition, or if you or one of your dependents is currently pregnant, you may want to reconsider COBRA. If you qualify through your employer for COBRA coverage, you cannot be turned down. If you go out to purchase health insurance on your own, you may find more affordable options but you could conceivably be turned down for pre-existing conditions. So, don’t decline COBRA coverage until you know that you have coverage under another policy. But if your not pregnant and don’t have any pre-existing conditions to worry about, then you owe it to yourself to look into your other options. Most brand-name health insurance companies offer individual and family health insurance plans that can be quite affordable, depending on which state you live in. Talk to a licensed agent in your area (or through the company I work for, eHealthInsurance.com) to compare plans and find a good match for your needs and budget. Another thing to consider is short-term coverage. If, like you said, you only need something for “a couple months” then short-term coverage might be a good idea. Typically, a short-term plan won’t cover pre-existing conditions or regular checkups, but it can provide you with a safety net while you’re between employers. At eHealthInsurance.com you can get quotes on individual and family or short-term health insurance plans and apply for coverage online. -Katie Bryant, licensed agent
