I need help understanding health insurance?

I have four girls with my ex-wife and I am now having to obtain a supplemental insurance. The children are already covered under the state medicaid program and am trying to find out about supplemental insurances but get more confused the more I see. I have been told by an insurance agent that no other major medical carrier will cover the girls as Medicaid is considered a major medical carrier. But why is it then that some people can obtain a seconday insurance and it is a major medical company such as through a spouses employer? Also, is there such a thing as a supplemental policy that is an HSA? The ex-wife knows that a supplemental will benefit no one, she just wants me to pay more out of my pocket. I know this because she told me.

  1. call the # behind the paper...ask them ...
  2. Many courts will require health insurance as part of child support even if the kids have Medicaid. In these cases the insurance will be considered primary and Medicaid will be secondary. Unfortunately the agent you spoke with is incorrect. Depending upon their Medicaid status Medicaid may pay for procedures not covered by the primary and may pay the primary co-pays. Yes, you can get an HSA but only if the courts and Medicaid will allow.
