Medical insurance billing and office administration- good choice for a job field?
I'm a young mother with two kids. My fiancee works during the days but we need a supplemental income to help pay the bills and take some pressure off of us. There's a small medical school nearby that offers a medical insurance billing and office administration program. It's approx. 7 months or so (I believe) and you go m-th from 6-10. They help with career placement after you're done with the program. When all is said and done I need a job that can have a somewhat flexible schedule (I love staying home with my girls as much as possible) that pays decent. If you know anything about this field, PLEASE- pass on the knowledge! I could really use some advice here. I've already been to college and had no idea what I wanted to major in and just wasted time and money. I don't want to do this again. So yeah- if you've got any info on this field please share :) thanks all!

- Hey Lulu, I truly hear what you are saying, I have been there done that also and I am going to be brutally honest with you in my answer because I have years of medical billing experience in both the workforce and in currently running my own home based medical billing business: Do Something Else Besides Medical Billing! Not because medical billing is not a great field but from what you have said I can tell it’s not what you think. I won’t go into a great deal of detail but: 1) If you complete the learning portion you will find it hard even with the help of the school to find a JOB doing medical billing because most employers in this field like at least one-two years of practical experience before they consider hiring you. 2) If you get a JOB that will take you on fresh out of school you will definitely not as you say, get paid decently. Billing is not like Coding because it isn’t a specialized profession so the pay is entry level at best (a polite way of saying just above minimum wage until you gain seniority). 3) You have been down this path before in college and in your present situation leaning towards medical billing will only lead you down the same path again. 4) No company is going to give you flexible hours so you can spend time with your kids because you are brand new and can’t be trusted to do the job of medical billing professionally. Working from home for an employer is mostly something you that is earned within this industry and it usually given to those that have spent at least 1 year within the employers office setting, has proven their work ethic and have proven their trustworthiness with their employer. Again I am only telling you this because there are several other opportunities out there that you can put your time and energy into that will produce a decent supplemental income in less time than studying to be a medical biller. Good luck to you. Lori http://medicalbillingbooks.tripod.com/ http://medicalbillingbooks.tripod.com/id2.html/ http://medicalbillingbooks.tripod.com/id3.html/
