Scan Medical Insurance

Is there any major medical insurance for pre-exsiting conditions???

I take care of my 50 year old mother, who is on COBRA, which went up to 700.00 monthly. We cannot afford this, but she needs medical insurance due to her pace maker. We've tried medi-cal, SSI, ect. Her ex-husband will not help her. He actually left her because she is sick, with the woman he was cheating on her with. Then he married her a year later. I am out of options and she needs help. Someone, anyone, everyone....please help. If she doesn't get medical care for her conditions and medicines for her heart, she eventually will die.

  1. You can get "high risk" insurance, which will not be cheap. You can go here for a general idea of the cost: https://lovetherates.com/Health/preexisting.htm
  2. Call 800.234.1317. That is the number for the National Uninsured Helpline. They have a complete list of state, county and federal insurance options for many (but not all) states. Also, $700 is very high premium even for a COBRA, for a single person. You may want to contact the former employer to see if less expensive plans are available or might be made available in the near future. Many employers are looking hard at offering a wider choice of less expensive plans.
  3. Pre-existing clauses are often waived if the client has previous "credible coverage". Since your mom is on COBRA, she should satisfy the conditions to have it waived. Her health, however, might cause her to be denied due to health underwriting. Is she able to work? If so, then most group plans that employers offer take the higher risk patients along with the low risk. If she isn't able to work, then SSI disability and medicaide are the options. If SSI has denied her, appeal, appeal, appeal. It often takes getting an attorney or other advocate involved to get SSI disability benefits but once approved, medicaide is a part of the benefits.
  4. Medicaid, and medicare, or a group plan through her employer. She'll have to get the medical care, and maybe file bankruptcy over it. $700 a month for Cobra is a great rate, at her age with a heart issue. WAY cheaper than paying on your own.
  5. I hate to give bad news, but no new insurer is going to take this case. Having said that, here are your options: Pay COBRA (which is probably a waste of money), so you have coverage. If you mother has no assets, let her go on SSI or Medi-Cal (or Medicare, if not in California), which will pay all of her treatment costs. If your mother has assets (i.e. a house), then those assets will be attached at her death, and you (or her heirs) will be liable for her medical expenses. In the USA, emergency care is always provided, regardless of abilty to pay. This is why immigrants are running-up health care costs. Take advantage anyway. I'm sorry that you have to deal with this, but Medicare will ultimately pay the expenses, so don't worry about that.
