Cracked Molar, no insurance. Any advice would be appreciated.?
Molar cracked, no insurance. Any advice please? I went to a dentist and she said I needed to have root planing/scaling, a root canal and a crown put in on my bottom left molar which is cracked off. Total cost would be around $4,000. I just got a new job so my dental wont kick it for another 3 months or so but the pain is starting to be unbearable I think it is infected as the tooth is very sensitive to the touch and it has a pulsing pain that is keeping me from sleeping. Has any use the stuff on dentalplans.com? Like the GE Wellness or Aetna Dental Access? Will the dentist jack up the prices or treat me differently if i ask about them? Will most dental insurance even cover this kind of stuff on a newly started policy? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

- Dental policies do not cover pre-existing conditions. I would get some other estimates from other dentists and put it to them honestly that you do not have insurance now but you will have in 3 months. Ask them what they can do and it they can do a payment plan for you. I think that sounds excessive for just one tooth.
- I had a discount card with Ameriplan, and it gave big discounts, with participating dentists, and pharmacists. The fee is 11.95 per month for one person and 19.99 for a family of four I believe. My boyfriend had an abscess an got his tooth removed for about 180 dollars and that included x-rays, prescription, the tooth being pulled, and the anesthesia Ameriplan.com
- most likely when you get insurance it will have a time limit on major procedures. So, for a crown, root canal, etc, you will have to wait an additional 2 years b4 they cover it. Your best bet, find a rookie dentist, dental school within days driving distance. Also, that seems a little high. Root canal -850 or so. Crown - 400 or so. Total should not be more than 1500......also the dentist should be able to work with you and hopefully understanding of your situation. Also, depending on location in your mouth, you could just do an extraction. Usually 100
- Try calling around, there are dentists who will work with you with payment plans and reduced rates, lots of people don't have dental insurance. Get a second opinion anyway, it's always a good idea when you get quoted a big number like that. Remember, even though most medical professionals are mainly in the field to help people, it's also still a business.
- Try a local dental clinic, they might be able to do it cheaper and set up a payment plan. Or if you a university or college that has a dental school near you, usually the students will perform dental work for cheap. Their professors oversee the work so you don't have to worry about them messing up.
- Try brown mouthwash from $1 store you don't have to go buy the expensive brand. Hold it in there as long as you can. It should relieve some pain. Try one of those clinics that go by income. Or just pay to have the tooth totally removed should only be couple hundred bucks if you have other teeth there (say for instance if this is the wisdom tooth that is bothering you). Best wishes are to you. OUCH!!!!
- $4000 is too much. Find another dentist. Expect to pay around $1000 for a root canal and $800 for the crown (whole procedure and crown)
